MIL JV Girls Basketball: LAHAINALUNA 36, Baldwin 17 - December 30, 2011

What a way to end 2011! The season finale matchup between Lahainaluna's JV girls basketball team and Baldwin had a little bit of everything - things I had not seen in my 35 plus years of watching basketball!

The JV girls, who start the game with only 5 on the roster, finally had a situation where they had to play shorthanded. It happened in the 3rd quarter. Frontcourt player Kyla Blando-Kahaialii committed her fifth foul and was out of the game, leaving the Lunas with only four on the floor. At the time, the Lunas led 23-9.

Still with only 4, the Lunas managed still play pressure defense and  outscore Baldwin 11-2! Even with a veteran coaching staff on Baldwin's sidelines, they could not take advantage of Lahaina only having 4 players! Love it!

Then late in the fourth, Misha Whitehead fouled out, leaving the Lunas with only 3 players. They managed to hold off the Bears and won 36-17.

Great effort by these girls. Look forward to them playing at the varsity level next year.

In addition to the players fouling out, the other memory from this game is when a player on Baldwin actually threw up on the court during the game. I had never seen that before. The look on Mina Faaumu's face was priceless! The game was delayed a while to allow the medical staff to clean the floor.
