Lahainaluna Invitational Tournament: LAHAINALUNA 53, Hilo 71 - December 20, 2012

After seeing Hilo hold its own and outplay Baldwin the previous night, I knew that Lahainaluna would be in for a hard time against Hilo tonight. Sure enough, they did. It was no contest, as Hilo outran, outshot and outhustled the taller Lunas to a 71-53 win. The thing about Hilo is that everybody plays basketball in Hilo . . . because of the rain, there is nothing else to do but go indoors and shoot hoops. Notwithstanding their camouflage warm ups - now that's country! - they can ball.

Jalen Carvalho, son of David Carvalho, Lahainaluna class of 1986, had a great game. He was hitting 3's from all over the place all game long. He's got a bright future ahead of him. It was nice catching up with David and also eavesdropping in on conversations he was having with Coach Larry Karinen, who coached the Lunas in their heydey back in the early and mid- 80's. Hearing names like Hanson, Tacon, Fernandez, Tamayo, Haleakala, Cabrera, Rickard - that's the Lunas I grew up watching when I was younger. And did I hear him right? Did they really play against Barrack Obama's Punahou team back in the early 80's? Wow.
