St. Anthony Invitational Basketball Tournament: LAHAINALUNA 41, Trinity Grammar (Australia) 47 - December 15, 2011

It would have been interesting to see how Lahainaluna really could have done against Trinity Grammar of Australia. Unfortunately, we'll never know as five Lunas sat out this one and only one was legitimately injured. Their two top scorers also sat out. So basically, the Lunas sent out John Mishima and the JV squad to battle against this tall and very good team from Down Under. And despite a horrendous display of home island refereeing by the MIL refs (the Aussies looked terribly perplexed each time a call was made . . . and understandably so), the Aussies led 19-4 after one quarter! On the bright side, the Lunas outscored them 37-28 the rest of the way.

My Two Cents

Trinity Grammar had a big fella to counter our big fella. Never thought I'd see two 6'8" guys battle it out in a high school basketball game on Maui.

Rushed over to this game after catching the Lady Lunas demolish Baldwin (yes!) up the street. Unfortunately, the girls couldn't come in to watch the game as the tournament organizers insisted on charging them the full price of admission even though this was the last game of the night and their fellow schoolmates were playing. Uncool!

Bought the 3-day pass for $15 (one day is $6) and a program. Nice program put together by St. Anthony. Photos and rosters and are nice. Had a nice chuckle when I saw LeBron James on our roster. It seems that each team included an NBA all-star on their roster. Nice!

Gavin Kahaialii has really improved from last year. A lot more confident, looking for his shot and making 'em, playing well on both ends of the floor. A lot of upside for this guy. Once he gets stronger and learn more fundamentals down low, he will be a force to be reckoned with.

By losing this game and getting into the losers' bracket, my shooting schedule crystallized with some certainty. No way they're gonna lose to St. Anthony tomorrow which means a 4:00pm game on Saturday when my wife and parents-in-law get home from the Philippines. So losing tonight actually works out to my benefit! I won't miss much of the boys' game and I can still catch the girls' game happening in Lahaina later that night!
