Lahainaluna Girls Thanksgiving Tournament: LAHAINALUNA 43, Waiakea 33 - November 25, 2011

The road warriors Lady Lunas varsity basketball team finally get to play some games before the home fans with their Thanksgiving basketball tournament up at Lahainaluna gym. The three day tournament will see them match up against Pearl City, Waiakea and the finale against OIA power and perennial HHSAA maker Kahuku. Curious to see how the team looks – my first look at them without Maiki Viela.

Unfortunately, the opening game of the tournament was held on Thanksgiving Day at 5:30pm. I was hosting Thanksgiving dinner in Wailuku for my family, so there was no way I could make it to the game against Pearl City. Now if dinner was at Mom’s house, guarantee I would’ve gone up! Anyway, I heard that the Lunas easily defeated Pearl City.

The next game was against Waiakea of the BIIF. They have made it to the HHSAA state tournament recently so this is a solid program. The Lady Lunas’ starting lineup was Ana Lauese, Princess Lauvao, Jade Chihara, Amanda Matsuda and Paige Casil. Fairly small line-up but excellent shooting and ball-handling. First subs off the bench were Petiola Tuakoi, Moana Hafoka, Loke Basques and the twins, Lindsay and Taylor Bates.

The Lady Lunas were never really challenged in this one. They pulled away in the second quarter, thanks to a brilliant display of shooting from forward Princess Nauvao, who drained 3 treys from the top of the key, all net. She is a welcome addition to the team with her size, ball handling and shooting ability. And she is fearless. Along with Ana Lauese, Chihara and Tuakoi, this is not a team that will be intimidated by anyone.

The team was led by Ana Lauese and Princess Lauvao, with 11 points apiece, and Petiola Tuakoi with 10 points.
