With all the hoopla surrounding the early game, the
post-game festivities honoring the Lady Luna seniors, as well as the impromptu junior prom proposal
at half court made by Jake “James Bond” Ryan to Paige Casil, the boys varsity game was definitely an
afterthought! Still, I mustered up my
professionalism and got down to shooting the game.
I was expecting a tough game against the boys from Maui High. After all, in the last match-up between the two teams in the Sabers’ gym, Lunas’ 6’8” center Gavin Kahaialii put down a thunderous one-handed dunk towards the end of the game that made the Maui News (thanks to yours truly) as well as went viral (I wish! Ha ha!) on Facebook. Nothing like getting dunked on in the waning minutes of a game that had already been decided – in your own gym – to fire up the team for the rematch. I know that Maui High assistant coach and Facebook friend Manny Ballesteros was trying to use that dunk to fire up his team.
For the most part, the game was competitive early on.
Fortunately, no one took any cheap shots or played dirty. The Sabers hung in
there but the depth of the Lunas eventually allowed them to pull away for the 63-34
victory. No dunks on this night for Mr. Kahaialii.
