MIL Boys Basketball: LAHAINALUNA 43, King Kekaulike 49 – February 4, 2012

It was Senior Night for the Lahainaluna boys’ varsity basketball team as they played their final regular season home game at the Lahaina Civic Center:

                Folau Tauese
                John Mishima
                Feleti Taufa
                Gavin Kahaialii
                Spencer Michael Perieff

Unlike the previous years, when Cassie Cockett took the initiative to get photos from me in order to make posters for the boys on Senior Night, no one had done it. As such, there were no picture posters anywhere to be seen at the Civic Center. It was kind of reflective of the season thus far – inconsistent, not seeming to care or having the passion to win. Just an opinion. Or maybe I’m just bitter because no one wanted to use my pictures for Senior Night! Ha ha!

Despite the energy that usually comes with Senior Night, the boys came out and laid an egg in a battle for second-place in the MIL between Lahainaluna and King Kekaulike. The Lunas trailed at half 24-14. How can a team only score 14 points in half?  At home? On senior night?!

After edging out Na Alii at their home gym a few weeks earlier, the Lunas were not able to beat Na Alii this time. The Lunas fell to 7-5. While the outcome of this game did not affect the tournament match-ups as they’ll face each other as the #2 and #3 seeds and King Kekaulike would have had home court advantage anyway, as they are hosting the tournament, you would prefer to have your team come out and try to play every game like it’s your last. That’s just me.

If I’m not mistaken, this is the third season in a row (that I’m aware of anyway, since shooting these games) that they boys have lost their home finale/Senior Night game. In 2010, the coaches decided to start the seniors. That backfired and they lost the game to a weak King Kekaulike team. In 2011, the Lunas were undefeated going into their home finale against rival Baldwin and Baldwin ended up taking the win 55-51. So losing home finales are nothing new for the Lunas. Nothing like getting momentum heading into the tournament.
