MENEHUNE: Lahaina Girls v. Kula – January 31, 2012

All for One and One for All
Despite being without their top gun Keleah Koloi due to a knee injury, the defending Menehune league champions Lahaina destroyed Kula 31-3.  In addition to Koloi, the team lost a lot of key players from last year’s champs, including the Fab Five Freshmen of Lindsay Bates, Taylor Bates, Aloha Salem, Lau Hafoka and Mina Faaumu.

However, the team is in capable hands of the their post players: 8th graders Andilyn Alavazo, Lisa Hafoka and 7th grader Kalolaine Uhila. The guard play will be tough, as the positions are manned by very young and inexperienced players: 7th graders Maya Ryan and Kalena Balingit; and a lot of 6th graders: Bonnie Gunn, Braeanna Estabillo, Keiko Aotaki, Angie Taufa, Sheilaika Agbayani, Aleah Wolf, and Rachel Balagso.

There is a “new” head coach this year as Ian Aotaki takes the reins of the team from Michael Bates, who moved up to the high school level with his twin daughters to coach JV and assist with the varsity. Despite their relative inexperience, the girls look confident and together. Good luck!
