The Lady Lunas’ 52 game consecutive win streak came to a
halt at the hands of the Baldwin Bears with a 9-8 loss. The Bears dominated the
first half of the match, with several quick scores and a goalie that was
blocking everything. The Bears also brought down a lot of supporters – it was
definitely a pro-Bear crowd at the Aquatic center. The more experienced Bear
team was faster to the ball and consistently outswam the Luna defenders down
the pool, receiving pinpoint bombs from their goalie and getting the numbers
advantage close to the goal for scores. Coach Mason made the adjustments at
half to make sure the team got back on defense, but that led to less
aggressiveness at the goal for scores, because they were concerned about
getting back on defense.
Still, after being down 8-2 minutes into the second half,
the Lady Lunas roared back. Bridget Joy and Hannalore Rolfing scored quick
goals to make it 8-4. After a goal by Baldwin, Mahea Kaaihue-Falahee scored on
a power play to make it 9-5 at the end of 3. The Lunas opened up the fourth
quarter with a flurry – Kanoe Dodd scored on a long goal and Bridget Joy
followed with another goal to make it 9-7. Then Dodd fed Joy for another goal
with just under 6 minutes left to bring the score to 9-8. Despite many attempts
on goal, the Lunas just could not get another score primarily because of the
play of the Baldwin goalie. It just wasn’t meant to be.
It’s still a long season ahead. At 2-1, anything can
happen, including starting another streak.
