In a showdown of the top boys’ teams in the Western
Division, Maui Prep eeked out a 3-2 win over the previously unbeaten Lunas to
avenge an earlier forfeit defeat and tie the season series 1-1. They did so
without their top singles player, Byron Doan, who was unable to play because of
academic reasons. It would’ve been fun to see him go up against the Lunas’ No.
1 singles player, Alec Wagner. The key match was at boys No. 2 singles, where
freshman Max Linder lost a tough one to senior Nathan O’Hanlon. Linder won the
first match handily at 6-1, but dropped a tough second match 6-7(4) after
leading most of the way, then ran out of momentum in the third, 6-3. Jordan Baclay, who normally plays no. 2
singles, was paired with McNeil Magdaong for No. 1 doubles and won a
competitive doubles match 7-6(4) and 7-6(3) to keep the Lunas hopes alive.
The girls’ took care of business, winning 4-1.
