LAHAINALUNA WRESTLING: Maui Invitational Tournament - December 10, 2011
Ever since watching my first Lahainaluna wrestling match a couple years ago, when Holden Mowat held on for a 1-0 three round win over a rival from Molokai, I have developed a tremendous amount of respect and awe for wrestlers. Both an individual and a team sport, you are out there to win points for your team and many teammates come out to support you when you're on the mat, but on the mat, you are on your own. No tag team wrestling here. So for people who appreciate both individual and team sports, you kinda get the best of both worlds with wrestling!
In addition to MIL schools, there were participants from Punahou, Iolani, Waianae, Mid-Pac, Mililani, Damien, and Konawaena to name a few. Lahainaluna had the most participants and their brand new mat, courtesy of the brilliant senior project of Cherise Milanio, stood out very nicely on the floor. What a beautiful mat.

My Two Cents:
Shooting wrestling is challenging, especially when shooting for a school that has multiple participants in every weight class, both boys and girls. Luckily this was the second day of the tournament, so was mostly semifinals and consolation matches going on. I tried to get all of the Lahainaluna wrestlers that participated today. If not, I apologize.
I originally planned to stay to about 4:00pm. But by 1:00pm, my trigger finger was getting fatigued and my okole sore from sitting on the ground trying to get good shots. Best picture taking was on the sideline of the mats facing the Lahaina side of the gym. The Napili side of the gym was dark and not as well-lit. I tried shooting from the scorer's table side, but eventually an announcement was broadcast ordering that non-essential people (i.e., non-coaches, non-officials) needed to stay off the blue. Still, I managed to get some good shots from the sidelines.
I was surprised to see an old familiar face - Duane Cabingas! My neighbor was one of the referees at the tournament. He was also a Lahainaluna wrestler in the early 80's, about the time when Lahainaluna wrestling under Kim Ball was starting to develop into a powerhouse. A lot of the alum from that time period went on to continue the wrestling program on the westside at the youth level - guys like Conrad Bolor.
It was also nice seeing my classmates - John Coston, whose son Josh was wrestling. Buffy Nakoa, whose son Chanse Uyeda is a defending state champ. Surficia Mowat, whose son Connor is a freshman wrestler but doing well and placed 5th in his weight class. Surfi's son Holden is one of the coaches for the team. Also Diane Pasion, whose son Reilly also placed fifth.
Not sure how many wrestling matches I can attend this year so I shot as much as I could. For more photos, click here.
