MIL Football: Lahainaluna 49 v. King Kekaulike 0 - September 6, 2013

The Lunas defeated the King Kekaulike Na Alii 49-0 in varsity action to go 2-0 in MIL play, 4-0 overall. Thank God for the mercy rule as it was pouring rain most of the night and the running clock in the second half helped move things along.

Christian Whitehead scored two rushing TD's in the first quarter, the first on a 21 yard run and the second from 1 yard out. Whitehead finished with 40 yards rushing on 3 carries. Jared Rocha-Islas opened the second quarter with a 30 yard run to make it 21-0. He finished with 37 yards on 3 carries. Jeffrey Kaimana Ancog scored a few minutes later on a 13 yard run to make it 28-0. He had 44 yards on 4 carries. Quarterback Sione Filikitonga scored on yet another long touchdown run, this time of 62 yards to make it 35-0 into halftime. Filikitonga has had one long touchdown run in each of the varsity's games this year. He finished  with 83 yards on 3 carries.

The second half was running time and time for the reserves to show what they can do. Freshman David Kawabata scored his first touchdown of his Lahainaluna career on a 10 yard run to make it 42-0. Nate Hapakuku-Nunuha added a 10 yard touchdown run of his own at the end of the third quarter to make it 49-0.

In all, the Lunas outgained the Na Alii 316 yards to 14. Na Alii had Jay Braun in his first game back from injury, but other than a long run on his first carry, he had a difficult time against the Lunas defense. Once QB Ryley Widell went out with an undisclosed injury, the Na Alii's chances went from slim to none.

The Lunas will have to continue to work on three areas to improve on: passing (2-9, 15 yards), turnovers (4 fumbles, 3 lost) and penalties (9 for 55 yards).

The Lunas were notably playing without key two-way starters Kiko Kohler-Fonohema, who injured his knee breaking up a pass in the first half last week against Kamehameha, and Connor Mowat, who strained his shoulder on a sack against Kamehameha. Both will be ready for the game against Baldwin on September 13.
