After Saturday’s match against Maui High where the Lunas look like they
had digressed from an early season of improvement, I was not sure what to
expect against the MIL’s #2 team in Division I.
The Lady Lunas were focused early. They took a lead 14-9. The frontline
was blocking well. Balls were dropping on Kamehameha’s side that normally would
be dug and kept in play. The fans in the stands were getting anxious. The
Warriors took the lead back. In the past, the Lunas would normally fold and the
game would get away from them. This time, they kept fighting and took back the
lead. But the Warriors are too strong and deep. They prevailed in the first set
21-25.
In the third set (actually toward the end of the 2nd set),
the Warrior’s coach put in Thalia Leauanae, the freshman daughter of my
co-worker. I made sure to get in some shots of her in action. Fortunately, she
had a really good game all-around: hitting, serving, and defense. The Lunas
shook off the 2nd set and played well in the third. Unfortunately,
they fell short 23-25.
