Lahainaluna boys and girls cross-country teams competed in their first meet of the season – the Baldwin Invitatational at Keopoulani Park. They were not able to compete at the meet at Maui High last week because they needed more practice time with their new coach. Their former coach, Skousen, stepped down after taking the Boys to the MIL Title last year. However, with the graduation of top runner Corban Kaikkonen and MIL Champ Willem Thorbeck returning to school in Japan for his senior year, the boys’ hopes to repeat as MIL champs appear slim.
The girls return Nicole Aceret and Noemi Granados. Aceret came in 24th at 28:20 and Granados 36th at 32:25. Looks like the team has a bunch of promising freshmen.
The boys return Kamal Golaube, Nick Ramirez, and Dean Nomura from last year’s team. Kerek Franz is also competing this year. I’m surprised to not see Kyle Shultz – he was a top runner last year as a freshman. Top finishers today were 18. Golaube, 20:28; 19. Dean Omura, 20:29; 20. Kerek Franz, 20:30, 36. Nick Ramirez, 22:07.
Will try to get more shots of the girls at the next meet. Next meet is at King Kekaulike at 8am on Saturday, September 6, 2014. Need to get there early again! Hope it doesn’t rain!
