MIL Football: Lahainaluna 55 at King Kekaulike 6 - October 5, 2013

It seems that whenever an opponent scores against the Lunas, a sleeping giant is awakened and unleashes its offensive fury on the opponent who dared scored on them. Such was the case tonight in Lahainaluna's 55-6 win over King Kekaulike to start the second round of the MIL regular season. After King K scored on a 9 yard fumble return early in the first quarter, the Lunas scored immediately to take the lead back for good. They erupted for 28 points in a span of 5 minutes and 19 seconds in the first quarter, scoring every way possible - 2 rushing TDs, punt return TD, and interception return TD. They added two more rushing TDs and a passing TD en route to 55 unanswered points.

Granted, the Na Alii were playing without two major offensive players in Jay Braun and Ferreira, the Lunas still saw the game as an opportunity to work on things and to get playing time for some of their reserves. Reserve linebacker and running back Robert Campos had a beautiful 40 yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Another reserve, Donovan Defang ended up scoring on a beautiful 27 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter to cap the scoring.

Lunas are now 7-0 overall, 5-0 in the MIL, and 1-0 in the second round.

Notable Stats
  • Lunas racked up 317 total offense (286 rushing) and 180 return yards while limiting King Kekaulike to 30 yards in total offense;
  • Lunas only had one turnover (1 fumble, 1 lost) versus 3 for King Kekaulike (3 interceptions, 2 fumbles, none lost)
  • Lunas still committing penalties - 7 for 68 yards while King Kekaulike was whistled for 2 for 17 yards.
  • No individual 100 yard rushers for Lahainaluna, although 9 players had carries: Jared Rocha-Islas had 3 carries, 75 yards and 2 TD; Christian Whitehead 7 carries, 65 yards, 1 TD.
  • Sione Filikitonga continued his consecutive game streak of long rushing TD's with a 21 yard run. That is now 7 straight games with a rushing TD of 21 yards or more. Incredible.
