CHRISTIAN WHITEHEAD |
Thanks to Fred Sinenci for taking photos of the game for me
while I was on vacation in San Diego. And thanks to ESPN550.com for
broadcasting the radio broadcast of the game on-line. As a result, I was able
to follow the game on the internet from my hotel room at the Embassy Suites San
Diego.
Coming into the game, I was concerned about the x-factor
known as King Kekaulike. They moved to Division II for this season, as their
enrollment apparently dipped under 1,000 for the first time ever. This gave the Lunas another team against which
they had to contend for the Division II title. However, the one new enrollee I
was concerned about was Jay Braun, an athletic freak of a junior who
transferred after two years at Seabury. While there, Braun was a beast in
soccer and track. And despite his size, his speed was comparable to Keelan
Ewaliko but he was incredibly strong, benching 225 pounds a high of 14 times at
the recent combine. Given that, I was curious to see whether Braun would make
an impact.
Turns out the Lahainaluna defense is the real deal. They
were awesome against Keaau, whose offense struggled to move the ball for
positive yardage against the Lunas. When you think about it, the 14 points came
off of a pick 6 interception for touchdown and the second touchdown came after
the Lunas fumbled a punt snap deep in their own territory. Against Na Alii, the Lunas’ defense was again
dominant. Braun had an okay debut, but the Lunas’ kept him under control for
most of the night.
The Lunas won this game easily 29-0.
MIL Record: 1-0
