LAHAINALUNA FOOTBALL v. KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS MAUI W 36-0 (August 31, 2012)

LUNAS #42 JARED PURDY RETURNS AN INTERCEPTION.

Lunas defense posted their second straight shutout in MIL play, leading the Lunas to a 36-0 win over the Warriors.

The score was not reflective of the game which was competitive in the first half. A nice pass and catch by Asi Fatongia in the end zone gave the Lunas a 7-0 lead with 4 minutes left in the first half. I didn’t get a clear shot of it, but ImuaLunas got a nice one from the back of the end zone.

#15 ASI FATONGIA
A personal highlight came at the end of the half, when back-up place kicker Reece Sinenci, filling in for an injured Christian Cardenas-Ayala, who appeared to injure his leg on a 36 yard field goal attempt in the first half, booted a 26 yard field goal with no time left in the first half to give the Lunas a 10-0 lead. Now think about this. When did Lahainaluna ever have a field goal? When did Lahainaluna consistently have kickoffs into the endzone for touchbacks? When did Lahainaluna ever have this kind of depth at the kicking position? Gone are the days of pooch kicks and squibbers to lead off the game, or going for it on fourth down because it was probably more effective than punting the ball. With Sam Filiai/Tytus Lucas booming monster punts (44.8 yard average) and finally soccer players Cardenas, Sinenci and Rocha on kickoffs and field goals, the Lunas’ special teams are finally looking like a legitimate threat. Football is all about field position and taking care of the ball and the Lunas are looking good in those departments.

The game boiled down to defense and the Lunas brought it. They intercepted Warrior quarter back Kalai Yap five times (Lucas with 2, Jared Purdy, Scott Issac Tongatailoa-Medeiros and Kaimana Ancog). The Lunas against held an opponent under 100 yards total offense.
